Climbing the breath-tau

Description:

Dykh-tau (5,204 m) is the second highest peak in Russia and Europe. It is included in the program "Second 7 peaks", "Stars of Bezengi", "Snow leopard of Russia". Dykh-tau mountain is located on the territory of the Kabardino-Balkarian National Park next to the famous Besengi Wall - the highest part of the Main Caucasian Range. In the Besengi district are six of the eight five-thousanders of the Caucasus. If you want to climb Dykh-tau, you can choose from 10 different routes from 4B to 5B difficulty category (in Russia routes are divided into levels from 1 to 6 with subcategories A and B at each level).

We offer a climb to the summit on the northern crest (rock-ice combined route, difficulty 4B), first completed by English climber John Cockin in 1988. This is one of the easiest and by far the safest climbing route to Dyh Tau. On the other hand, it is really a technical climb, so a successful climb requires some climbing and rope skills. Good acclimatization is also needed, so it is best to climb Dykh-Tau already well acclimatized on Elbrus/Kazbek or spend a few days in the Bezengi area before climbing.
