The leading place among the cultural institutions of the city belongs to the historical and art museum, founded in 1918 on the personal initiative of the archaeologist, local historian, artist Ivanov Petr Petrovich (1886-1942), an honorary citizen of the city, the first director of the museum, who donated more than 2,000 unique objects representing mainly historical value to the museum. The museum has unique archaeological collections, which were excavated by P.P. Ivanov. The art department of the museum presents paintings by Aivazovsky, Polenov, Savrasov, A. and S. Gerasimov, works by Gau, Orlovsky, sculptor Lancere. |
