State Academic Theater named after Mossovet

About the company:
When, in the early 1920s, after the October coup, theaters that could be called “mobile” began to form in Russia, they somehow, on carts, with all the scenery and costumes, traveled around Moscow and gave cheap performances “for the simple spectator”, accompanying them with all sorts of philosophical and religious discussions and disputes. One of these groups at first was the Moscow Theatre of Trade Unions (MGSPS). Perhaps, thanks to the fact that the famous actor and director E. Lyubimov-Lanskoi took charge of it, the team did not break up, but became a strong and well-coordinated troupe with a modern and quite interesting repertoire. In this form, the troupe existed until 1940, until it was headed by the famous student of K. Stanislavsky and E. Vakhtangov - Yuri Zavadsky. He brought his pets to this theater - V. Maretskaya, N. Mordvinov, R. Plyatt, and subsequently invited L. Orlova, F. Ranevskaya, L. Markov and other remarkable actors to the troupe, who made the glory of the Russian theater (since the late 1930s it was already called the Mossovet Theater) included the best plays of world drama, he led the search for new names among young Soviet and foreign authors. By the way, he was the first of the Moscow theatergoers to open to the Russian public T. Williams and J. P. Sartre, it began its “Moscow” period today already known worldwide directors G. Yanovskaya, K. Ginkas, G. Chernyakhovsky, M. Weil, S. Jura, continuing cooperation with the theater and as an actor. Since the mid-1980s, Pavel Chomsky became the main director, and then the artistic director, a famous director who headed theaters in Riga, Leningrad and Moscow. Today in the repertoire of the theater (and it works on the main stage, in the hall for 1,200 seats, and on the stage “Under the roof”, designed for 120 people) there are about 25 names of performances representing a wide range of genres and directions of drama, starting with the version of the rock opera “Jesus Christ is a superstar” and ending with the experience of the scenic presentation of the ironic story of the once banned and exiled from the USSR S. Dovlatov “Reserve”. The troupe of the theater is a constellation of stage talents, the popularity of which is beyond doubt. The theater continues the traditional line of realistic psychology for Russian art, not shying away from experiments in the field of the avant-garde. He focuses on the viewer, on the person who came to the theater because he thinks about life and loves it in all its forms.
