Botanical garden
Description:
The Botanical Garden of Moscow State University (Pharmacy Garden) is the oldest scientific botanical institution in Russia. It was founded by Peter the Great in 1706 as the Pharmacy Garden for growing medicinal plants on the then northern outskirts of Moscow - behind the Sukharev Tower. In 1805, the garden was acquired by Moscow University and turned into a Botanical Garden. The ancient park retains some features of the planning of the XVIII century and its subsequent changes in the era of landscape garden style. Some trees in the park reached the age of 250-300 years; among them the white willow is the oldest tree in the central part of Moscow, and larch, according to legend, planted by Peter the Great himself. The old greenhouses of original architecture contain unique collections of tropical and subtropical plants, including centuries-old palm trees and cycads, some of which were donated to the garden at the beginning of the last century from the collection of Count Razumovsky and from the Demidov greenhouses on the Sparrow Mountains Garden is a branch of the Botanical Garden of Moscow State University on the Sparrow Hills and a historical and cultural monument of the capital. The park presents an exhibition of decorative, aquatic plants, 3 greenhouses (subtropical plants, tropical plants and a collection of plants of different climatic zones) and a shadow garden.
