The history of the street goes from the XVIII century. Then in its place passed another street - Kurakinskaya. It began at the Moscow highway and ended near the Vitebsk railway. Behind the building it continued Kurakina road. In the 20s of the XX century, the street was attached to Kurakina Road and renamed the Southern Highway. Over time, the old buildings were demolished, and high-rise buildings began to be built along the edges of the street. Then it was paved and renamed Altai street. The name was given in honor of the virgin lands of Kazakhstan, which the Altai Territory was rich in.
