Big Nikitskaya Street

ooh Big Nikitskaya, 19, Moscow, Russia

Description:

In 1920, this street was renamed Herzen Street in honor of the 50th anniversary of the death of the writer, who, as figuratively said, was awakened by the Decembrists. It was originally called Novgorod, but it is official. In common parlance it was called the Volotsk road in the direction from Moscow.

Under Ivan the Terrible, Oprichnina was built on the left side, and on the right - Zemshchyna.

In the XVI century, boyars with families began to actively settle here. At this time, the grandfather of Emperor Mikhail Romanov Nikita Zakharyin-Yuryev founded the Nikitsky convent here. He gave the street the name Big Nikitskaya.

Now this street, whose historical name was returned in the nineties of the last century, is considered the center of Moscow. It is divided into two parts by the area of the Nikitsky Gate of the Alexander Garden. In the so-called ceremonial part of the street there are houses where Dashkovs, Dolgoruky and poet Bryusov once lived.

The second part of the street begins with the Great Ascension temple, where Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin got married.
