Description:
The Orthodox Church of Cosmas and Damian in Old Paneh belongs to the Pokrovsky decency of the Moscow city diocese. The temple is located in the Central Administrative District of Moscow in China-city. The main throne of the church was consecrated in the name of Saints Cosmas and Damian was consecrated in honor of the Assumption of the Mother of God.
The wooden temple of Cosmas and Damian was built in the distant 1462, but in 1564 the church completely burned down and a new stone building of the temple was built in its place. The structure was made in the form of a two-light four, which has five chapters. Legend has it that Ivan the Terrible married Vasilisa Melentievna, his sixth wife, in this church.
With the addition in 1640 of the church attached to the Assumption chapel, the temple began to be called by a new name - the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God, in the Old Singer. In 1803, during the capital reconstruction, the building was given the features of classicism, which was especially evident from the new refectory and bell tower.
After years of restrictions, the church was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1995.
