Church of Nicholas the Wonderworker on Bolvanovka at the Tagansky Gate

ooh Upper 20, Moscow, 109004

Description:

The Church of Nicholas the Wonderworker on Bolvanovka at the Tagansky Gate almost ruined the construction of the metro. In 1944, the Taganskaya station was built here, and it was initially decided to demolish the former religious building as an obstacle to the development of the metro. Already began to destroy the bell tower, but suddenly the building was recognized as a monument of architecture of federal importance, which is still today.

In terms of architecture, the temple is truly unique, it is considered the last church in the capital, built in the classical medieval style in the XVIII century. The author of the construction project was a well-known metropolitan architect named Startsev. They say that he was an opponent of Peter’s reforms and deliberately built a temple, according to ancient traditions.

The area where the church is located was called Bolvanovskaya not at all because of the mediocrity of the local residents of the time. According to one version, somewhere here before there were Tatar idols, who were called fools. But more realistically, the area got its name because of the residence of artisans who sewed a kind of headdress, called dummy.

Address of the church: 20 Verkhnaya Radishchevskaya Street.
