Church of Nicholas the Wonderworker in Clenniki
ooh Maroseyka, 3, Moscow, Russia
Description:
The Church of Nicholas the Wonderworker is located in the capital of Russia, in Moscow. This is an Orthodox church of the Epiphany delicacy of the Moscow diocese.
The history of the church stands at the origins of 1468, when Ivan III built the “votive” church of Simeon Divnogorets here, as a thank you for the fact that the strongest fire in the White City did not spread to the Kremlin and China City.
Later in 1657, a stone church was erected on the site of an old wooden church. In 1749, after a fire in the church, a bell tower was built nearby, and the facades of all buildings were partially rebuilt.
In Soviet times, the church was closed and beheaded, and its abbot, Father Sergius, was arrested and sent to camps. As a result, the building of the church first housed warehouses, and then the offices of the Central Committee of the Komsomol.
In July 1990, the building was returned to the Orthodox Church of Russia. Crosses, chapters, and the interior of the church were restored. Now the church is a typical building of the Russian architectural style, with stained glass windows and domes.
