Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in Putinka

Description:

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in Putinki in Moscow is one of the last tent churches in Russia. They were actively built in ancient Russia after the adoption of Christianity. Such structures differ from modern churches in that they are crowned not with domes, but with a tent. There is no architectural violation, such temples were allowed in Byzantium.

Until a certain time, churches in Russia were wooden. And to make a dome of wood is not easy, it is easier to build a tent.

The church on Putinka was also built originally wooden, but was completely destroyed by fire, this fate befell many such buildings in the capital.

The stone and final version of the temple was completed in 1652 under Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. The name of the church is associated with the fact that there was a traveling embassy court, where messengers of other states usually stayed.

Under Soviet rule, the temple was closed and even used as a place for rehearsals for circus artists. In 1990, the church was returned to its former purpose. The restoration was actively assisted by actor Alexander Abdulov. There was also his funeral after his death.

The temple is located at the address: Malaya Dmitrovka, 4.
