Church of St. Alexis" Metropolitan of Moscow

Nikoloyamskaya Street, 60, Moscow, Russia

Description:

The Church of St. Alexy Metropolitan of Moscow was built in the 18th century opposite the Church of Sergius of Radonezh. According to legend, back in the 14th century, a tent stood in its place, where Sergius of Radonezh himself came and together with St. Alexei watched the construction of the Spaso-Andronikov monastery.
Restoration work is still underway in the church. Inside the temple was a baroque iconostasis, which dates from 1751, as well as painted walls in 1778. The throne itself was consecrated in the name of Theodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God, and the side aisles were consecrated in honor of Alexy Metropolitan and Nicholas the Wonderworker.
In addition, the Church of St. Nicholas had two significant relics of the 16th century – “The Nativity of Christ” and “Deesus”. In its place in the 16th century there was a wooden church, then in the 17th century it was a brick building and only in 1748-1751-ies residents erected the now existing church, which belongs to the object of cultural heritage of Federal importance.

In 1922, under the influence of state authorities, the church was looted, but it continued to receive parishioners until 1928.

Three years later, a new attack came and the building began to break down, but did not bring it to the end. Later in 1966, the undestroyed room became a metal processing plant, in 1984 the repair and construction department was moved there.

After the reconstruction, the building was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church and until now work is underway to revive it and create a protected area in this historical territory.

The Church of St. Alexy Metropolitan of Moscow is open to parishioners and is located in Moscow, Rogozhskaya Sloboda, Stanislavsky Street 29, building 1 (Nikoloyamskaya Street, 60).
