Church of the Beheading of John the Forerunner

moscow, Andropov Avenue, 31

Description:

The Temple of the Beheading of the Head of John the Forerunner in Dyakov is one of the main architectural creations of the 16th century. For five centuries, the holy place has seen fire, revolutions, and atheists.
The temple is located in the Kolomenskoye National Park, near the Moscow River. The most convenient way to get to this attraction will be from the metro station Kashirska.

The temple itself is a building of four identical pillars with its own entrances and altars, and one large, symbolizing the Beheading of the Head of John the Forerunner. The Orthodox shrine is a monument to national architecture, a symmetrical building on all sides. It was built by order of Ivan the Terrible, who was crowned on the throne.

The church functioned until 1924, and then was closed for a long time and used as a warehouse. Only in the 90s the temple was fully restored, and services resumed. The main shrine of the church is the icon Beheading of the Head of John the Forerunner.
