Clock Tower of the Front Gate of the Sovereign Court

andropova Prospect, 39 Moscow Russia

Description:

Before entering the Sovereign Court, a beautiful baroque stone structure is called the Front Gate of the Sovereign Court. The construction of the tower was conceived as a watch-spiritual instrument.

The clock tower together with the Front Gate make up a single ensemble, and is a four-tiered building with an unusual octagonal tent. The third tier was distinguished by an amazing clock mechanism (master P. Vysotsky), which, unfortunately, has not survived. Further above it, took the place of the clock fighting bells, which were located in the openings of the Clock Tower.

The construction of the tower began in 1672 and lasted a year. Its main decoration is the double-headed eagle, which was restored in 1994. At the moment, in the building of the Front Gate, there is a museum exposition “Members of the history of Kolomensky”. Thanks to the efforts of the staff, the work of the Clock Tower was resumed: the clock was restored and the bell tower was restored.

On the second tier there is an exhibition dedicated to tower clock mechanisms of the XVI - XIX centuries. This is the only exhibition of this kind in Russia.
