Palace gates in the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve

andropova Prospect, 39, Moscow, Russia.

Description:

The entrance to the museum-reserve of Russian wooden architecture "Kolomenskoye" is fenced with a majestic white-stone building, namely the Palace Gate (they are also called the Front Gate).

The gate was built in the late 17th century under Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. They are a structure consisting of four tiers on three pylons with two arches between them, decorated with a wonderful mosaic ornament.

Interestingly, the second tier used to occupy an organ-clock mechanism, which at certain times of the day imitated a lion's growl.

Initially, the Front Gate was intended for the entrance of honorable guests, ambassadors and the Tsar himself to the Sovereign Court, and in the modern world they are the main entrance to the museum, as well as the beginning of the museum exposition, and now anyone can pass through them. You just need to take the metro to Kolomenskaya station and walk 5-7 minutes on foot.
