According to the books of the Patriarchal Order, this temple was built of wood on August 24, 1698. And already from 1712 to 1731, the Epiphany Elokhov temple was rebuilt from stone. According to some reports, the order for restructuring and brick for this was given by Tsar Peter himself.

The main shrine of the Epiphany Cathedral of Elokhov are the relics of Saint Alexis (1293 – 1378), as well as the miraculous Kazan image of the Most Holy Mother of God. For a long time the relics of Saint Alexy were inaccessible to the Orthodox Church, but in 1947, at the request of Patriarch Alexy, after Stalin’s personal permission, the relics were returned and transferred to the Epiphany Cathedral in Elokhov. This cathedral is also known for the fact that the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin was baptized here.
