Grotto in Alexander Garden

Arsenal of the Moscow Kremlin, Moscow, Russia

Description:

One of the attractions of Moscow is the grotto in the Alexander Garden. The Italian grotto, also called the Ruins, was created in the early XIX century. It is located in the park of the Tver district of Moscow, which is called the Alexander Garden. Everyone who walked near the walls of the Moscow Kremlin saw this architectural structure.

The author of the project is one of the most famous architects of that time - Bove O.I. He made a huge contribution to the restoration of Moscow after the Patriotic War of 1812.

The grotto is a symbol of the revival of the city and is a small indentation, an artificially created cave, with a semicircular arch of red brick and black granite, framing four low columns. During the walks of royal persons in the garden, the royal orchestra was located in the grotto. Also near the grotto was a beautiful fountain, which gave coolness in the hot summer.

In 2004, the grotto was restored due to the poor condition of the structure. During the restoration, archaeologists discovered various artifacts and human remains. All the finds belong to the period of XIII-XVIII centuries, now they are in the Museum of the Moscow Kremlin.
