The temple of Archangel Michael in the estate of Arkhangelsk
Description:
The temple of Archangel Michael in the Arkhangelskoe estate is one of the oldest stone buildings in the estate. The church was built in 1667 and is an architectural monument of world importance.
The construction of the church was carried out on the initiative of Yakov Odoevsky, who owned Arkhangelsk in the middle of the XVII century. His serf architect Pavel Potekhin began the construction of a one-storey stone church on the site of an old wooden chapel.
In the center of the architectural composition of the temple there is a quadrangular base - a quadruple, which ends with a real cascade of decorative stone semicircular kokoshniks forming a pyramid completed with a thin onion dome poppies.
Diagonally from the main four are the boundaries of the temple, creating the original asymmetry of the architectural composition. Next to the church was built a three-tier bell tower, dismantled because of dilapidation already in the XX century.
After the revolution, a branch of the Arkhangelsk Museum-Reserve was located in the church, complex reconstruction works were carried out. The original shape of the roof and light windows under the dome of the temple were restored. Today the church is returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.
