ooh Varvarka, 4, Moscow

Description:

The temple was built in 1698-99, included part of the eponymous church 1568, which was cooped instead of wooden in the name of Saints Boris and Gleb (the second half of the XIV century, in 1434 the Moscow fool St. Maxim the Blessed was buried in it, in whose name the throne was built, and the temple received the second name). The main throne is St. Maximus the Blessed, from the south (right) the chapel of St. Maximus the Confessor (a prominent figure of the church of the VI-VII centuries). After the fire of 1737, it was renovated in the Baroque style. In 1827-29, instead of the former, disassembled belfry, a new, two-tier bell tower was built (the upper - the belfry, the lower - the entrance to the temple) in the Empire style.

Pillarless, rectangular in plan, double-light, with a light drum and an bulbous head above the central throne and a cupola over a vaulted, single-pillar refectory. The three-hapsid lower floor (high subclet) in the XVII-XVIII centuries served as a place of storage of property of citizens during fires and disasters. The facade with wide window openings and false windows. Central throne with closed vault. The south aisle is combined with the refectory. In the temple and refectory preserved fragments of paintings of the XVIII-XIX centuries. and two white-stone mortgage boards.

Internal window slopes with bevelled corners at the top are a technique rarely found in Russian architecture of the XVII-XVIII centuries. The bell tower consists of two waning upward tiers with a dome completed with a spire.

In the late 1920s, the regent of the temple was a monk Platon (Izvekov, in 1971-90 - His Holiness Patriarch Pimen of Moscow and All Russia).

Closed in the 1930s. He was ruined. He was beheaded. In 1965-69 it was restored. Since 1970 - under the jurisdiction of the All-Russian Society for Nature Conservation.

It was returned to the faithful in 1991. Divine services resumed after 1994.
