Temple of Simeon Stylus on the Cook

povarskaya street, New Arbat district, Moscow city.

Description:

In Moscow, on the New Arbat, on the Povarskaya, there is the Temple of Simeon Stylpnik. It was built in 1676-1679 after the decree of Tsar Fyodor Alekseevich.

The church is made in the style of Russian narrows. The exterior of the snow-white building is quite simple, but elegant. The upper part of the main volume is decorated with rows of kokoshniks and patterned drums, which are under small onions of green domes. The bell tower has an openwork tent with arched openings and 2 rows of windows framed by casings. There is a carved frieze under the kokoshniks. The drums of the aisles are also magnificently decorated. The tier covering of the church was replaced by a more practical and simple four-sided one, but was restored in 1966 after restoration.

The temple has always been very popular as a wedding place for the Moscow intelligentsia. In 1801, the sensational wedding of Count Nikolai Petrovich Sheremetev with actress Praskovya Ivanovna Zhemchugova-Kovaleva took place here.

To date, the Church of Simeon Stylpnik on Povarskaya has become an object of cultural heritage of the Russian Federation.
