Church of St. Nicholas at the Transfiguration Cemetery
Russia, Moscow, St. The Transfiguration Shaft, 25
Description:
The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is an active Orthodox church on the territory of the Preobrazhensky cemetery in Moscow. The temple was built at the end of the XVII century and belonged to the Old Believer community. Since in the early 1850s the Old Believers were accused of treason by Emperor Nicholas I, by 1857 the temple was rebuilt and consecrated in honor of Nicholas the Wonderworker. Ten years later, a monastery was founded at the temple, some of the buildings of which have survived to our time. In the thirties, the monastery was closed, property was plundered, and some buildings were destroyed. A hostel was placed in the remaining premises.
Currently, the church has two entrances: from the west to the Orthodox part of the church, and from the north to the Old Believers.
