The Church of St. Nicholas in the Kuznetsk Sloboda

Vishnyakovskii Per., 15, p. 7, Moscow

Description:

The Church of Nikola in Kuznetsy is one of the few churches in the post-Soviet space that has never been closed.

In the period from 1490 (the approximate date of the foundation of the Kuznetsk settlement) to the beginning of the XIX century, at least two church buildings were located on the site of the future church. The first was built in 1491. The second church was built with the blessing of Patriarch Joachim in 1683. The temple had a chapel in the name of St. Sergius of Radonezh in 1766, a second (northern) chapel was built - in the name of St. Basil of Amasius. In 1805, the church was dismantled, and a new church was built at the expense of parishioners.

In 1847, the temple was rebuilt: the third tier of the bell tower was erected, an extensive four-pillar refectory appeared. In the new refectory were installed large altars. The northern altar, consecrated in the name of St. Basil of Amasius, was later consecrated by Metropolitan Philaret in honor of the introduction of the Most Holy Theotokos to the temple, but the day of memory of St. Basil continues to be celebrated as a patronal feast, and still the saint is considered the patron saint of the temple.

In 1991, at the expense of parishioners, a baptism house was built and consecrated in the name of Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir.
