Temple of Barbara the Great Martyr at Varvarka
varvarka street, 2, Tver district, Moscow
Description:
There is very little information about this monastery. Historians suggest that the temple appeared in the XIV century. It was just south of the current church. The first building appeared in 1514. The author of the project was the architect A. New. He made a stone building with an admixture of Italian taste. After almost 300 years, Major I. Baryshnikov and his fellow merchant A. Samgin decide to completely rebuild the church. For this, they turn to the architect R. Kazakov.
When the Patriotic War broke out and the French invaded Moscow, the church was defamed. In the building of the monastery, the French arranged a stable, destroying frescoes and breaking icons. The temple was restored two years later. It was repaired and closed. For about 50 years the church was empty. In 1965, architect G.A. Makarov undertook its reconstruction.
Today, the temple is considered active and is always open to visitors.
