Church of the Great Martyr Catherine on Vspol

ooh Large Ordynka, 60/2, Moscow

Description:

The first information about the wooden temple on this site is dated 1612. In the language of Moscow of those times, spolnoye meant arable land located beyond the actual border of the urban settlement, the land in the area of modern Serpukhov Square was cultivated by the Catherine Black Sloboda of ploughmen, in which by 1651 there were 87 yards (Sytin). At the same time (1657) the church was replaced by stone.

The existing Baroque temple was built in 1766-1775 by Carl Blanc. It is likely that the construction of the temple was commissioned personally by Catherine II during her coronation in 1762. Blank built a new building next to the old one, combining two temples with a central volume with a bell tower. The new (preserved) church operated in the summer, the old (heated) in the winter.

At the same time, in 1769, a fence was built (redesigned in the 1820s after the fire of 1812), using grids made in 1731 for Cathedral Square in the Kremlin.

Icons for the temple were painted by D. G. Levitsky together with V. I. Vasilevsky not preserved.

The warm church, which burned down in 1812, was rebuilt only in 1870-1872 in the name of the Savior Not Made by Hands (see photo 1883). In 1879-1880, the architect D. I. Pevnitsky built an almshouse on the territory of the church.

In 1920-1924 Patriarch Tikhon served in the church on the feast day.

The temple was closed in 1931-1992, used for various offices and housing.

In 1970-1983, the old Catherine Church was externally restored by the restoration workshops of the Grabar Institute. The bell tower was destroyed in the 1930s. The building of the Savior Warm Church is devoid of a dome and is used for industrial purposes to this day.

In 1992 it was transferred to the Orthodox community.

On December 7, 1994, he was transferred to the Orthodox Church in America.

The first Liturgy in the temple was celebrated at the Annunciation in 1995.

On June 11, 1999, the great consecration of the church by Patriarch Alexy II took place during the service of Metropolitan Theodosius.
