Novodevichy monastery

Novodevichy Passage, 1, Moscow, Russia

Description:

The full name of this monument of history and architecture is Novodevichy Theotokos-Smolensk Monastery, it is located in the capital of Russia on the Maiden Field, near Luzhniki. There is a monastery at the very end of Bolshaya Pirogovskaya Street, which used to be called Prechistenka.

The monastery was founded by Prince Vasily III in 1524 in honor of the decade since the capture of Smolensk during the next Russian-Lithuanian war. The Lithuanians who defended the city surrendered on the first day of the siege.

For a long time, this place was gloomy, since royal females traditionally languished in prison here. Evil tongues say that Basil III built a monastery to imprison his first wife, who was childless, and from whom he panned to abandon, which happened. The former wife went to a monastery after the divorce, but not to this one.

Now it is just an active convent. Ten years ago, the Museum of the Moscow Regional Diocese was solemnly opened here.
