Monument to Karl Marx

Description:

The creator of the famous book “Capital” and the founder of the Marxist movement did much with his works for the development of the country. In terms of monumental propaganda, the installation of a monument to Marx was considered, in the opinion of Lenin, the most important task. The leader talked about the creation and installation of the sculpture in 1920. However, this year only passed the selection on a competitive basis and the laying of a monument on the Theatre Square.

Then in the life of the country began personnel changes. Lenin’s idea was not realized until 1961. At that time, the USSR was ruled by N. Khrushchev, who opened the monument.

Karl Marx is depicted on the podium, as if he was broadcasting to the people about a new life and a new world. On the monument is the famous slogan: “Workers of all countries, unite”. The author did not forget about Marx’s associates. On both sides of it are two pylons of granite. One of them immortalized the phrase of V. Lenin, and the other – F. Engels.

The sculptor was Lev Kerbel. The gray granite monument, weighing 160 tons, is located on the Theatre Square (Teatralnaya metro station).
