Shukhov Tower

Russia, Moscow, 8 Shabolovka Street.

Description:

Shukhov Tower began to be built in 1919 by decree of the Defense Council.

It was necessary to build a radio station as soon as possible, but there were not enough resources.

Therefore, wooden supports of 145 m in height were installed at the construction site.

Positive emotions from such a costly decision did not last long.

In the first year, one of the masts was hit by the plane, which led to its destruction. The Council decided to build a metal tower.

The new design is strong: during the war, the aircraft caught on the mast, the tower survived.

According to the idea of engineers, the height of the overall design of 9 sections was to be 345 m, weighing 2200 tons. The project is not implemented. A tower of 6 modules about 160 m high was built.

June 29, 1921 was marked by a tragic event.

When manipulating one of the modules, the third module collapsed - damaged the rest in the fall.
In 2008, a pedestal in the form of a tower was put on Sretensky Boulevard.

The symbol of television broadcasting at that time was the Shukhov Tower.
TV shows began in 1938, the final came out much later - in 1967.

You can get to the tower by bus 105 from the Dzerzhinsky bus station to the village of Dachny.
The rest of the way you need to walk through the forest on the banks of the Oka.
