Square "Maiden Field" in the city of Moscow
moscow between street. Great Pirogovskaya, Elansky St., Plychycha St
Description:
Maiden Field Square is a small park in Moscow, which has the shape of a triangle in plan, located near the Garden Ring between Big Pirogovskaya Street, Elansky Street, Flying Street and the passage of the Maiden Field.
The former name is Samson Meadow. The field owes its new name to the Novodevichy Monastery, to which this area adjoined and to which it was granted by the royal decree of 1685. There are, however, other versions: the first reminds us of the times of the Tatar-Mongol yoke, perhaps it was here that the girls who were taken prisoner were gathered. According to another version, on this field, Posad girls grazed cows, and in summer evenings they arranged games, danced.
In 1765-1771, not far from the square, on the Maiden's Field there was a state theater, in which free performances were given in summer and on holidays. After the plague epidemic in 1771, performances did not resume. Traditions of folk festivals began to develop after the transfer of Christmas and Easter festivities from under Novinsky.
The modern square was laid out in 1948 by the architect M. P. Korzhev in co-authorship with B. V. Belozersky and S. V. Chaplina. There are two monuments in the park: L. N. Tolstoy (sculptor A. M. Portyanko, architects V. P. Sokolov, V. V. Bogdanov) and N. F. Filatov, one of the founders of pediatrics in Russia. The inscription on the granite pedestal reads: “To the friend of children Neil Fedorovich Filatov”. This monument was erected in 1960 according to the project of the sculptor V. E. Tsigal. In the square there is a fountain, which serves as a ventilation kiosk of underground communications of the Frunze Academy.
Near the square is the First Medical Institute named after I. M. Sechenov. On the side of Elansky Street near the square are the clinic of obstetrics and gynecology of the First Medical Institute and the temple of Michael the Archangel at the clinics on the Maiden Field.
