Cathedral of the Znamensky Monastery

The majestic red-brick Znamensky Cathedral, located in Zaryadye, was founded in 1631 and consecrated in 1684. This is all that remains of the monastery, once located on this territory. The name of the monastery and the church itself comes from the name of the family shrine of the Romanov family - the icon of the Sign of the Mother of God of Novgorod, who consider one of the first iconographic images of the Virgin.

Experts call two possible causes of the monastery and the church: the death of the nun Marfa (in the world – the wife of Fyodor Romanov) or the birth of the heir to the throne Alexei Mikhailovich. This year, generous donations were received.

First, a cold house church was built, but after a terrible fire in 1668, a new Znamensky Cathedral was built with the funds of boyar Ivan Miloslavsky. Built this beautiful five-domed temple master from Kostroma Fedor Grigoriev and Grigory Anisimov. This information was found in documents walled up in the wall. The facade of the temple is made in the native Russian traditions, and its vaults were based on powerful walls. The iconic church was two-tiered: in the upper part there was a summer temple, and in the lower part there was a heated chapel of Athanasius of Athos and a refectory. Subsequently, the lower temple was re-consecrated in honor of St. Sergei of Radonezh with the chapel of Nicholas the Wonderworker.

Of course, this stunning temple did not escape the historical events of our country. For several decades it was restored, closed and used as a museum and concert venue. Only in 1993, after protracted restoration work, divine services resumed.
