Sreten Church
Moscow Region, Shakhov R-N, D. Sands
Description:
In 1684, the Great Cathedral was founded in the Don Monastery, financed from the royal treasury. The work and lighting were completed in 1698.
Under his altar in 1712, the temple of the Meeting of the Lord was founded and lit. The money for its construction was made by the Imeretian king (one of the feudal kingdoms of Georgia) Archil, who later became the tomb of the Imeretian nobility, princes, and some princes - Bagrationov, Dadianov. The first people buried here were the king and his sons. Along with this, famous Georgian figures found their last refuge on the territory of the church.
The Sretensky church after Archil was expanded and a semicircular altar room was added to it. For its modification, a lot of funds were donated by Archil’s daughter, Daria. The windows were made of expensive “Cherkasy” glass, and the church floor is covered with cast-iron curtain boards.
After the Patriotic War, in 1815, the temple was restored. In 1832, the iconostasis and all images of the Sreten church were returned by the zeal of A.I. Bagration.
