Corner Arsenal Tower of the Moscow Kremlin

between Red Square and Alexander Garden, Moscow, Russia

Description:

The corner Arsenal Tower is one of the buildings of the Moscow Kremlin, erected in the 15th century by an Italian architect.

Few people know that for a long time its name sounded very different, namely - "Dog Tower". The explanation for this was that this object was located near the boyar yard of the Dogs.

The main purpose of this tower is defense, since it was the end point of the defense line of Red Square and controlled the crossing over the Neglinnaya River. Confirmation of this is a secret underground passage from the tower to the river. Unfortunately, it has not survived to this day, as it was covered during the reconstruction.

As for the appearance, the tower has a unique octagonal openwork tent and is the most powerful tower of the Kremlin, and this is not surprising, since the thickness of its walls reaches four meters!

You can see the Corner Arsenal Tower from Manege Square, getting there from the metro station "Okhotny Ryad".
