Ilyinka Street
Description:
Ilyinka Street is one of the 3 main streets running through the territory of the Kitay-Gorod district, which has been preserved since the days of ancient Moscow. A walk along Ilyinka is extremely interesting for tourists, since the street by and large has retained its historical appearance.
The length of the street is 0.55 kilometers. The street starts from Red Square, the main parade square of Moscow, and ends near the Ilyinsky Gate.
In the XIV-XV centuries, the street was called Dmitrovka - from the church of Dmitry Solunsky, which was located on the site of the Exchange, in the 30s of the XX century to the 90s, the street was renamed Kuibyshevskaya. Initially, the street received its name in honor of the Ilyinsky monastery, which was located on the Dmitrov Sacred. The monastery has not survived to this day. The church of Elijah the Prophet is alive.
In former times, most of the street was occupied by the courtyards of monasteries - Troitskoe, Novgorod, Iosifovskoe, Voskresenskoe, Alekseevskoe. The improvement of the street had during the reign of Catherine the Great: then Karuninskaya (today’s Exchange Square) appeared here, and in the 80s of the XIX century – lay stone houses with stunning architecture.
