Varvarka Street
between Moskvoretskaya embankment and street. ilinka
Description:
Some researchers believe that the street was named Varvarka after in 1514, thanks to the efforts of merchants, the church of St. Barbara was built here. However, even in the written scrolls of 1434, it was already mentioned as “Varyskaya”, in the description of the burial of the wonderworker Maxim the Blessed. The origin of the street name is unknown.
There is generally a legend, which tells that on this road left the capital of the squad of Prince Dmitry to the historic battle with Mamay. At that time, the street was called Vsekhsvyatskaya and led towards Ryazan.
Varvarka runs along the base of the hill above the Moskva River. Nearby, almost parallel here before stretched the street Great, the space between these roads called Zaryadye.
The street has experienced peculiar ups and downs. Until the XIX century, aristocrats from the nobility settled here, later even swindlers and petty thieves. Under Soviet rule, Varvarka was renamed Stepan Razin Street, and many communal houses were built in Zaryadye. Now Varvarka returned to its former name, communal houses were demolished, and several museums are located in noble mansions.
