Alexander Garden

Located in the center of Moscow, at the western wall of the Kremlin

About the company:

The Alexander Garden is laid out along the western wall of the Kremlin in 1819-1822 on the slope of the Borovitsky Hill leading to the Moscow River, by order of Alexander I as part of the restoration of Moscow after the fire of 1812 and symbolizing the deliverance of Russia from Napoleonic invasion. Earlier, the Neglinnaya River flowed at this place, through which the Trinity Bridge led from the Trinity Tower to Kutafya. The first step of the architect O.I. Bove, designing the Alexander Garden, was the conclusion of the river in a pipe running underground. A reminder of it now serves only the Trinity Bridge, which serves as a transition from the Upper Garden to the Middle, and an artificial reservoir on the Manege Square by Z. Tsareteli. (established in 1996). The first, in 1822, was opened the Upper Garden. It starts from the Revolution Square and ends with the Troitsky Gate. From the Troitsky to the Borovitsky Gate leads the Middle Garden (opened in 1822), and from the Borovitsky Gate the Lower Garden begins, ending with the Kremlin Embankment. The structure of the garden - three parallel alleys running along the Kremlin, the main plantings - blue spruce, linden, natural shrubs (lilac, acacia, jasmine) coexist with artificially broken flower beds. A two-hundred-year-old oak tree survived. One of the attractions of the garden, reminiscent of the war of 1812, is the cast-iron gate to the Upper Garden from the side of the Revolution Square (architect E. Pascal). In 1841, the same O. Bove under the Middle Arsenal Tower was built grotto "Ruins". In it, during the solemn events in the Alexander Garden, an orchestra was located. In 1914, the obelisk “300th anniversary of the reign of the House of Romanov” was installed. In 1918, the names of the rulers were replaced by the names of revolutionary thinkers. In 1967, in honor of the 25th anniversary of the defeat of the German fascist troops near Moscow, a memorial to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was built in the Upper Garden of the Kremlin Wall, since 1993 - Post No. 1 of the Guard of Honor. The eternal flame was brought from Leningrad from the Field of Mars.
