Museum of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations
About the company:
The first MGIMO History Museum was founded in 1984, the year of the Institute’s 40th anniversary.
At the beginning of the XXI century, the museum found a new life, when on September 1, 2001, in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, responsible officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, an updated exposition was solemnly opened. This event was preceded by intensive preparatory work on the search for photo-documentary materials reflecting the history of the formation and development of the Institute.
On the eve of the 70th anniversary of MGIMO, the University History Museum experienced its third birth. The exposition of the museum was moved to the building of the Scientific Library named after I.G. Tyulin. The choice of the place is due to the idea of creating a single museum and historical complex on the basis of the library, uniting the museum of a rare book with its unique exposition and the museum of MGIMO history. With the active participation of the MGIMO Alumni Association and with the support of Sokolniki CEC, Norilsk Nickel MMC and MAKS insurance company, a new design concept of the museum was developed and implemented. It was decided to preserve the chronological principle of exposition formation. Significantly expanded the historical and documentary fund, collected information about the largest scientists, well-known teachers who brought up many generations of MGIMO. The museum preserved and supplemented the photo gallery of honored scientists, full members and corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and RAS - graduates of MGIMO. The University, through its museum, pays tribute to the huge team that has shaped its rich history and traditions throughout the years of MGIMO’s existence – from all 15 rectors to teachers whose memory lives on in their students.
