Ingozero

Russia, Murmansk region

Description:

Ingozero is a fresh lake in the southern part of the Kola Peninsula, in the Murmansk region. It is located southeast of the city of Kirovsk, between lakes Kanozero and Umbozero at an altitude of more than 111 meters above sea level. The lake belongs to the water system of the White Sea and is connected with it by the Inga River.

Ingozero lies in a wetland, wooded and hilly area. The surrounding hills reach 188 meters high. The largest of them are Kohtavuara (186 meters) and Kalancha (187 meters). The lake is surrounded by deep swamps (up to 2 meters) and pine, spruce-birch forest. Trees in places above 16 meters.

In the east the relief of the coast is flat, in the south, north and west the mountains rise. The sunset on Ingozer is unusually beautiful. On the west bank you can see the ruins of the village of the same name. Ingozero (21 square kilometers) occupies the 33rd place in area among the lakes of the Murmansk region. It consists of 2 parts - the lake of uneven elongated shape and a large bay - the Western lips.

In the basin there are many small bays (Virmaguba, Eastern Guba, Matryonina and Epes) and capes.

In the center are scattered small gentle islands. The largest of them is Bear Island.

Ingozero flows the river Virma and many nameless rapid mountain streams.

There is a highway on the west coast. During the Soviet years, there were several settlements here, which were later abandoned. The nearest settlement is located 20 kilometers (October village). East of the lake begins the winter.

The name Ingozera is rooted in the Sami language (the word "ying" means "ice", and Ingozero - "ice lake").
