Komsomzero

Russia, Murmansk region

Description:

Komsosero is a small lake in the west of the Kola Peninsula, located east of the city of Kovdor at the foot of the high mountain Komsavara (about 490 meters). The shape of the lake is elongated, uneven, a little more than a kilometer long. Komsosero feeds on atmospheric precipitation and belongs to the water system of the Barents Sea. A small stream connects it with the river of the same name and Girvas Lake.

The lake was formed as a result of filling the key water depression between the elevations.

Its area is less than one square kilometer. But the depth is quite large - in places up to 28 meters.

The lake is famous for its crystal clear water, so transparent that the bottom is visible even at great depth.

In 1983, Komsoser was awarded the status of a natural monument. Both the lake and its coast are protected. Industrial activities and felling of trees are prohibited. Tourism is not allowed to avoid contamination of the monument.

The shores are covered with taiga forests, pine, birch and spruce. Here grow rare species of plants, including the real shoe, as well as special fungi Anthrodia, which are a sign of ancient forests.

In the lake lives trout and listed in the Red book paliya from the family of salmon. There are several theories of the origin of the name. Some researchers believe that it came from the Norwegian "cosmo" - "big boat".
