Lake Naljavr
Description:
Nyaljavr is a fresh lake in the north of the Murmansk region, located west of the Kola Bay. Along its shore stretches the Murmansk-Pechenga highway and the Kola-Pechenga railway.
The lake is connected to the Barents Sea by the Ur River. The height above sea level is just over 141 meters.
The shores are hilly and wooded. Nearby elevations reach 310 meters high. The largest of them are Mount Salzhvyd (310 meters) and Small Meluaivish (270 meters). The shore of Lake Nyaljavr is covered with birch dense forest. In the southwest, swampy areas prevail. The northern and southern shores are decorated with sandbanks, and streams flow from the nearby mountains into the lake. On the northern shore is the village of Pervomaisky. Here the lake is crossed by a reinforced concrete bridge.
The name in translation from the Sami means “Pests’ Lake”. Nyaljavr (17 square kilometers) occupies the 40th place among the lakes of the Murmansk region. The shape of the lake is uneven, elongated, expanding to the south. The pool is filled with small unnamed islands. It's a very picturesque place.
The lake is easily accessible, so there are many fishermen. In the local waters live whitefish and other lake fish.
During World War II, the front line ran along the shore, where fierce battles were fought. In memory of the dead soldiers, a mass grave was created near Pervomaisky.
