Lake Onkamojärvi

Russia, Murmansk region

Description:

Onkamoyarvi is a lake in the Murmansk region of Russia on the Russian-Finnish border. It is located north of the Arctic Circle in the eastern part of the province of Lapland (Finland). Russia accounts for only a small part of it. The area of the lake is 18 square kilometers. The height above sea level is about 290 meters.

On the banks there are settlements - Anttila, Korpela and Onkamo. The shores are heavily indented, waterlogged. In the west, Cape Kärpäniemi is issued, in the east - Cape Nilinemi. The northern part of the lake is decorated with the bays of Kallunkilakhti and Kirilakhti.

Many rivers and streams flow into the lake, the most significant of which are Liinasoya and Koirankyurenoya. Only one river flows - Onkamoyoki, connecting the lake with the Kovda basin and the White Sea.

The water surface of the lake is decorated with 22 islands, the largest of which are Vitsinsari, Kallunkisari, Paltsarsari and Nilisari.

In 1944, during the Great Patriotic War, the 19th Army kept a defense on the border, as evidenced by the ruins of military fortifications.
