Lake Sueljavr

Russia, Murmansk region

Description:

Sueljavr is a picturesque freshwater lake in the northeast of the Kola Peninsula. Its name is rooted in the Sami language (“suel” – island). The lake is located 38.5 kilometers from the Barents Sea and 10 kilometers from the Serebryansk Reservoir, at an altitude of 240 meters above sea level.

Sueljavr belongs to the basin of the Barents Sea and is connected with it by the flowing Big Olenka River.

The lake is usually fed by atmospheric precipitation. The banks are mountainous, slightly swampy. Nearby hills reach places 365 meters. The largest of them are Mount Sun (366 meters), Nevskaya (319 meters) and Sueljavrpakh (295 meters).

Sueljavr is one of the 70 largest lakes in the Murmansk region. Its area is about 12 square kilometers, and the length of the coast is about 33 kilometers.

The lake was formed as a result of the descent of the glacier, which caused its uneven shape with rugged edges. On the northern and southern shores of the lake adjoin small peninsulas forming bays.

There are not many islands, and the largest of them have no names. In addition, there are many surface stones on the northern and southern coasts. From the nearby hills in Sueljavr drains many small streams.
