Description:
Aku-Aku Gorge is located on the western side of Khibin (Khibin Mountains) on the Kola Peninsula. It has a length of 7 kilometers along the slopes of the peak of Hibinpahkchorr from the north-east to the south-west direction. "Aku-aku" in translation from the Sami language means "great mother", that is, the basis of the basics.
Aku-Aku is a deep, long and narrow gorge at times with sheer rock walls. The gorge connects the valleys of the Yumjecorruai stream and the left tributary of the Goltsova river, which flow into a fairly large lake Imandra. There is a mountain path along the gorge.
There are several steep ascents and descents, on which there are many open stones, a wonderful waterfall. The highest point of the gorge is located at 440 meters above sea level. Not far from the Yumjekorruai stream in Aku Aku there is a small picturesque lake with bright green-blue water, surrounded by sheer cliffs. You can bypass the lake from the east side along a narrow path overhanging the water.
Slowly, the Aku-Aku gorge can be walked in a couple of hours. Walking here is interesting both in summer and winter.
