Teriberka: Whales in the Barents Sea
Description:
1 day.
Murmansk - Teriberka
Meeting of the group in Murmansk, transfer to Teriberka. We settle in a hotel on the shore of the Barents Sea and go for the first acquaintance with Teriberka.
Today we will see the graveyard of ships, huge swings on the shores of the Barents Sea, an abandoned school and a ship that washed ashore a few years ago. We will also see the scenery of Leviathan from the film of the same name.
For dinner we will go to the local cafe, where we can try fresh seafood (cod steak, sea scallops and hedgehogs, as well as crab).
Teriberka is a small village on the beach. People have been living in this place since the 17th century - traditionally the locals were engaged in fishing. In the middle of the 19th century, a kind of rise began here - the area was actively colonized because of the seafood rich Barents Sea, whaling was actively developed. By the beginning of the 20th century, Teriberka was quite a full-fledged settlement - there was a church, a lighthouse, a school, a paramedic station. After the revolution, a collective farm was organized in the village, a dairy farm and herds of deer were added to fishing. By the end of the 60s, stagnation gradually began, and then the decline of the village.
Currently, there are about 1,000 people living here and there are no production facilities. The authorities planned to relocate residents to Murmansk, but this process is moving very slowly. Teriberka became widely known after the film Leviathan, which caused a mixed public reaction. It is thanks to the film, the fashion for the Arctic and the fact that Teriberka is the only place on the shore of the Barents Sea, where you can reach by ordinary car, tourists now come here.
2 days.
Teriberka. Exit to sea
After breakfast, we will arrive at the port and take a ship to the sea.
We will spend time (7-8 hours from May to August, 5 hours in September, 3 hours in October and November) watching the beauty of the coast, northern waters and marine life. Inhale the salty breeze of the Barents Sea. We will reach the small islands located along the coast of the Kola Peninsula. If desired, you can fish - cod is well caught here. We'll see bird markets.
The probability of meeting with whales in spring and summer reaches 100% - in the 2021 season, all our groups saw whales, in the 2022 season, 3 groups did not see whales (1 time did not meet, 1 time the sea was closed by border guards because of exercises, 1 time the sea was impossible due to a storm).
According to the situation at sea, we will be able to make a decision and go towards the village of Far Zelentsy!
Far Zelentsy is practically a ghost village with a centuries-old history. Once the Pomeranian settlement in the 20th century received its development as a fishing settlement. And the most attractive building with its architecture is the Murmansk Biological Station, in which today some of the test tubes with samples of flora and fauna of the Barents Sea have been preserved. But there is one more operating building of the Laboratory of Algology. And of the residents in far Zelentsy only caretakers tour.base and diving center. We will walk around the village and go back.
We'll be back in Teriberka by tonight.
3 days.
Teriberka - Murmansk
Before lunch we will walk around Teriberka. We will visit the beach of round stones "Dragon eggs" and reach the waterfall of Small Batarey Lake, whose waters flow into the Barents Sea.
This will be an interesting track along the shores of the Barents Sea and the tundra!
Depending on the physical preparation of the group, the weather and a sufficient amount of time, you can reach the fortifications of the Great Patriotic War - trenches built of stones and artillery batteries have been preserved. The length of the walk is 10-15 km on a simple relief.
And we go back to Murmansk (time by arrangement in the group).
Importantly, the program can be changed, activities can be reversed (at worst – canceled) due to the weather conditions, which in the North are very severe and poorly predicted. Club guides will make every effort to implement all the items on the program, but they do not yet know how to manage the weather.
