Monument to Yermolov
Stavropol, K-Marx Avenue, near Tiflis Gate
Description:
For some reason, it is so historically that the generals of the Russian army play one of the main roles in the formation of the Russian state in cultural and economic terms in the XVIII - XIX centuries.
One of these bright generals-creators was Ermolov Alexei Petrovich (1777-1861), Russian general from infantry (1818 from 1837 - general from artillery). He participated in the war with France in 1805 - 1807. In the Patriotic War of 1812 chief of staff of the 1st army, in 1813 - 1814 commander of division and corps. From 1816 to 1827 he was commander of the Separate Caucasian Corps and chief administrator in Georgia during the Caucasian War.
A.P. Ermolov entered the history of the Caucasus not only as a warrior, but also as a wise politician and transformer. He ended the slave trade in the Caucasus, largely tamed the internecine strife of local princes, contributed to the development of cities, especially resort towns of the Caucasian Mineral Waters. Yermolov initiated the development of officers’ Assemblies, and then – Noble and Public, with him in the Caucasus published the first newspaper. The role of Ermolov in the history of Stavropol is especially significant. The city in the center of the Caucasus, at the intersection of strategically important roads, immediately attracted the attention of the “proconsul”, as General Yermolov was called at that time. As Catherine II once contributed to the foundation of Stavropol from a fortress, so Yermolov later made the capital of the huge Caucasian region from a county town.
The monument to General A.P. Ermolov was erected on the avenue of K. Marx of the regional center in 1998. The author is the famous Stavropol sculptor N.F. Sanzharov. The bust was cast at the Minsk foundry, the pedestal is made of noble maroon granite in the suburbs. Rare for pedestals, the color of granite gives the composition an elegant luxury, and bronze gives dynamics and impressiveness.
