The history of Nevyansk is one of the brightest pages in the history of the development of the Urals and the formation of Russian metallurgy. It was here that the industrial power of the Russian Empire began, the first large private metallurgical enterprises were created, unique art crafts were born and the famous Demidov dynasty was formed. Today Nevyansk is considered one of the oldest industrial cities of the Middle Urals.
Uptown
Long before the appearance of the city, the territory of modern Nevyansk was covered with dense coniferous forests and crossed by numerous rivers, the main of which was the Neiva. Here lived the indigenous peoples of the Urals - the Mansi and other Finno-Ugric tribes engaged in hunting, fishing and gathering.
Russian pioneers began to actively explore these lands in the XVII century. The main reason for the interest of the state was the huge reserves of minerals. Already at the end of the XVII century near Neiva were discovered rich deposits of iron ore and magnetic iron, suitable for the production of high-quality metal. These discoveries played a decisive role in the future of the city.
The foundation of the Nevyansk plant
The beginning of the XVIII century was a turning point for Russia. After the defeat of the Russian army at Narva in 1700 during the Northern War, it became obvious that the country needed its own powerful metallurgical base for the production of guns, nuclei, guns and other types of weapons.
By decree of Peter I in 1701, the construction of a large state-owned metallurgical plant began on the Neive River. At the same time, a working village arose nearby, which later became the city of Nevyansky.
The construction took place in the most difficult conditions:
constantly breaking through the dam;
There was a shortage of experienced professionals;
Most of the workers were peasants who had no experience in building large enterprises.
The equipment had to be manufactured almost locally.
Despite the difficulties, the first iron smelting was obtained on December 15, 1701, and the first iron was forged on January 8, 1702. This date is considered the birth of one of the largest metallurgical centers of Russia.
Transfer of the plant to Nikita Demidov
On March 4, 1702, Peter I made a fateful decision - handed over the plant to the talented Tula gunsmith Nikita Demidov.
This was one of the most successful economic decisions of the era.
Demidov received the plant almost in its infancy, but managed to turn it into the largest metallurgical enterprise in the country in a short time.
With him:
New blast furnaces were built;
Mines were opened;
Iron ore mining has developed;
roads were laid;
Forges were created;
There were workshops of various profiles;
Residential quarters were built for workers and craftsmen.
It was from here that the famous industrial empire of the Demidovs began, which later included dozens of factories throughout the Urals and Siberia.
The Golden Age of Nevyansk
The first half of the XVIII century was a time of rapid prosperity.
The Nevyan factory produced:
cast iron
iron;
anchors;
guns;
kernels;
tools;
metal products for the construction of the fleet.
Particularly famous was the so-called "Siberian iron", characterized by high strength and purity. It was also exported to Western Europe.
A working village grew rapidly around the factory.
There were:
houses;
warehouses;
commercial space;
Orthodox churches;
schools;
administrative buildings.
By the middle of the XVIII century, the Nevyansk plant became one of the largest metallurgical enterprises in Russia.
Sloping Nevyansk Tower
The main symbol of the city was the famous Nevyansk inclined tower.
It was built approximately between 1722 and 1732 by order of Akinfiy Demidov.
The height of the tower is about 57.5 meters, and its deviation from the vertical exceeds two meters.
It is not yet known why the tower tilted.
There are several versions:
builder error;
subsidence;
design features;
intentional architectural design.
The tower performed several functions:
Watchman.
sentry
bell towers;
factory administration;
treasury;
Laboratory for Metal Quality Testing.
Especially famous is its so-called “hearing room”, which has unusual acoustics: words spoken in a quiet voice in one corner of the room are well audible in the opposite corner, while in the center of the room they are almost impossible to understand.
The Demidov Legends
There are many legends associated with the tower.
The most famous of them say:
The secret coinage of silver coins;
secret underground passages;
about cellars where precious metals were melted;
of the laboratories of alchemists;
about flooded premises.
Historical evidence for most of these stories is not found, but they made the tower one of the most mysterious monuments of the Urals.
The Old Believer Center of Russia
In the XVIII-XIX centuries, Nevyansk became one of the largest centers of Old Believers.
The Demidovs were quite tolerant of the Old Believers, since many of them were talented masters:
foundrymen;
blacksmiths
jewelers;
artists;
Icon painters.
It was here that the famous Nevyansk school of icon painting was formed.
Its distinctive features were:
use of gold leaf;
bright mineral paints;
extremely fine drawing of details;
a combination of ancient Russian traditions and Ural artistic features.
Today, Nevyansk icons are considered one of the most valuable works of Russian religious art of the XVIII-XIX centuries.
XIX century - industrial development
After the sale of Demidov plants to entrepreneur Savva Yakovlev, the enterprise continued to work successfully.
In the XIX century, Nevyansk became one of the largest settlements of the Urals.
Developed:
gold mining;
mechanical production;
manufacture of fire pumps;
bell casting;
production of famous metal chests;
trade.
Large trade routes passed through the city, large fairs were held.
In 1819, regular gold mining began, which further strengthened the city's economy. Later, new deposits of precious metals were discovered nearby.
The railway
The most important event was the opening of the Ural mining railway in 1878.
Nevyansk received a direct railway connection with Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Tagil and other industrial centers.
This greatly accelerated the development of trade and industry.
The fire of 1890
In May 1890, the city suffered the worst disaster in its history.
A strong fire destroyed almost two-thirds of the wooden buildings of Nevyansk.
After that, the city began to actively rebuild, gradually replacing wooden buildings with stone ones.
Revolution and Civil War
The revolutionary events of the early XX century seriously affected Nevyansk.
In June 1918, there was a major anti-Bolshevik uprising in which several thousand people participated. After fierce fighting, the uprising was suppressed.
In July 1919, the city was finally occupied by the Red Army.
Soon a revolutionary committee was formed, and the restoration of industry began.
Soviet period
In 1919, Nevyansk received the status of a city.
After the Civil War, the industry was gradually restored.
There are people in town:
mechanical technical school;
new schools;
hospitals;
House of Culture;
telephone exchange;
construction industry enterprises.
During the Great Patriotic War, thousands of residents went to the front, and factories produced products for the defense industry. In Nevyansk, funds were also collected for the construction of the Sverdlovsk Komsomolets tank column.

Today Nevyansk is one of the most famous historical cities of the Sverdlovsk region.

Nevyansk is one of the most important historical cities of the Urals and is considered the birthplace of the Ural metallurgical industry, preserving the unique heritage of the era of Peter I and Demidov.
Nevyansk is one of the most unusual and original cities of the Sverdlovsk region, located about 90 kilometers north of Yekaterinburg. It is considered the cradle of Ural metallurgy and the birthplace of the famous industrial dynasty of the Demidovs. Despite its relatively small size, the city annually attracts thousands of travelers interested in the history of Russia, industrial heritage, architecture of the XVIII century, Old Believer culture and nature of the Middle Urals.
The main feature of Nevyansk is that here the history literally comes to life. Unlike many modern cities, a significant part of the historical center has preserved the atmosphere of the era of Peter the Great. Ancient buildings, merchant houses, factory buildings and a majestic inclined tower allow you to feel the spirit of the time when the Urals turned into the main industrial center of the Russian Empire.
The main symbol of the city is the famous Nevyansk inclined tower. It is a unique architectural monument of the XVIII century, which is often compared with the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The height of the structure is about 57.5 meters, and its deviation from the vertical exceeds two meters. However, the tower is famous not only for its slope. Inside there is an old clock with an English musical movement, still operating today, as well as the famous auditory room with unusual acoustics, where a quiet whisper in one corner is perfectly audible in the opposite. Excursions are accompanied by stories about numerous legends associated with the Demidovs, secret dungeons and mysterious laboratories.
No less interesting is the historical and architectural museum-reserve, which unites several objects of cultural heritage. Here you can get acquainted with the history of the development of the Urals, the development of metallurgy, the life of workers in factories of the XVIII-XIX centuries and the activities of the famous Demidov dynasty. The museum expositions present ancient documents, maps, weapons, iron and iron products, items of merchant life, collections of minerals and unique works of decorative and applied art.
A special place in the history of the city is occupied by Old Believer culture. For several centuries, Nevyansk was one of the largest spiritual centers of the Old Believers of Russia. Thanks to this, the famous Nevyansk school of icon painting was formed here. Icons of local masters are distinguished by unusual subtlety of execution, the use of natural paints, gold leaf and rich symbolism. Many of these works are now in the largest museums in the country and are highly valued by art historians.
Of great interest is the Transfiguration Cathedral - the main Orthodox church of the city. Its majestic architecture, rich interior decoration and tranquil atmosphere make it an important place for both pilgrims and architecture lovers. Nearby there are ancient streets with merchant houses of the XIX century, allowing you to imagine what Nevyansk was like during its industrial heyday.
Fans of industrial tourism will be interested to see the preserved hydraulic structures of the old Nevyansk plant. The stone dam, the factory pond and the remains of the first metallurgical industries remind of the beginning of Russian industrialization. It was here that the industrial power of the country was born, and the technologies developed at the Ural plants became known far beyond the borders of Russia.
Nevyansk is also a convenient starting point for exploring the nature of the Middle Urals. The surroundings of the city are rich in coniferous forests, picturesque hills, small lakes and rivers. At any time of the year, you can make walks, bicycle trips, arrange picnics or go on excursions to the natural monuments of the region. In autumn, the forests are painted in bright golden-red colors, and in winter the surrounding landscapes turn into a real snow fairy tale.
Not far from the city there are other famous sights of the Urals, so travelers often include Nevyansk in the route of the "Demidov Ring". In one or two days you can visit Nizhny Tagil, Upper Pyshma, Yekaterinburg, old factory settlements, museums of mining civilization and natural objects of the Sverdlovsk region.
For families with children, interactive excursions, historical quests, master classes in art painting, blacksmithing, souvenir making and traditional Ural toys are organized in the city. Visitors can try themselves in the role of a blacksmith, mint a commemorative coin, paint a wooden blank or get acquainted with the features of ancient crafts.
Nevyansk is famous for its folk crafts. Tourists can purchase products of local craftsmen: painted wooden caskets, birch bark products, artistic forging, ceramics, bells, souvenirs with the image of an inclined tower, copies of Nevyan icons, jewelry from Ural gems and author's works of local artisans.
During the year, the city hosts historical reconstructions, festivals of folk culture, craft fairs, concerts, festive events for the City Day and Orthodox holidays. Especially popular are events dedicated to the history of the Demidovs, the development of metallurgy and the traditions of the Old Believers, where you can see costume performances, performances of folklore groups and master classes in ancient crafts.
Nevyansk has a calm and cozy atmosphere of a small Ural city. There is no large flow of tourists, so acquaintance with the sights passes without haste and long queues. The city is perfect for educational holidays, family trips, photo tours, weekend excursions and acquaintance with the history of Russia.
Due to its successful location, rich historical heritage, unique architecture, legendary inclined tower, ancient temples, world-class museums and beautiful Ural nature, Nevyansk is deservedly considered one of the most interesting tourist destinations of the Middle Urals.
