About the company:

Gorky Drama Theatre is one of the oldest theaters in Russia.

The first stone of the building was laid in 1798. Initially, it was a fortress theater, the owner of which was Prince N. G. Shakhovsky. In 1896, construction work was completed on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street in the new building of the theater, in which it is located to this day. In May 1896, the theater began its theatrical activity. The first work was an opera by M. Glinka called “Life for the Tsar”, in which F.I. Chaliapin took part.

Nizhny Novgorod Drama Theatre is also known for the fact that it is the only theater in Russia in which all of Gorky’s plays were staged. In 1968, the theater received the title of "Academic".
