At this time, the basin of the Vetluga River was a remote region inhabited by the Maris. The Monk Barnabas lived in this remote land for 28 years, being an example of a saint perfect hermit.

After the death of Barnabas, his followers founded the Troitsk-Varnavinsky monastery here, which gave rise to the present Varnavin. A church was built over the grave of the primate, where miracles of healing the sick were performed, for which Barnabas in 1639 was listed as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church.
