Domes over the Volga: temples and monasteries of Nizhny Novgorod
Description:
Nizhny Novgorod is famous for its breathtaking views of Strelka – the place where the Oka meets the Volga. The effect of picturesque river landscapes is enhanced by beautiful examples of cult architecture that adorn the banks of two great Russian rivers. During our tour we will get acquainted with the main cathedrals and churches of Nizhny Novgorod, talk about their history and architecture, remember famous historical characters and Russian saints who are associated with Nizhny Novgorod churches and monasteries. And, of course, will not do without views of Strelka, especially since many temples and monasteries of the city are located on beautiful observation decks.
During our trip, we will visit the following places related to the cult architecture of the city:
The Annunciation Monastery is the oldest monastery of Nizhny Novgorod, an ancient outpost of Orthodoxy on the Oka and Volga, founded in 1221 together with the city itself.
• Ascension Pechersk monastery, whose buildings of the XVII century keep the memory of the times of the Nizhny Novgorod militia. It was in this monastery that the famous Russian saints Euthymius of Suzdal and Makariy Zheltovodsky took tonsure.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (Novoyarmarch Cathedral) is one of the highest Russian churches, whose interior amazes not only by its size, but also by the artistic value of frescoes and carved lime iconostasis with a height of 7-storey building.
Spassky (Old Fair) Cathedral keeps the memory of the famous Auguste Montferrand and those times when the Nizhny Novgorod Fair was just beginning to gain fame as the largest in the world.
The Christmas Church is rightly called one of the most beautiful churches in Russia. A unique sample of Stroganov Baroque is famous for patterned carvings on white stone and preserved gilded iconostasis of the early XVII century.
• “The Square of Three Confessions”, where Orthodox, Armenian and Protestant churches coexist next to each other. And all this on the observation deck, which offers breathtaking views of the Oka and the Nizhny Novgorod Fair.
More vivid and memorable our story will make a variety of illustrative material that will help us feel the atmosphere of the “spiritual Lower”.
