Makariev Monastery on the Volga

Description:

All his lines are simple.

At the foot of the walls grows ferocity.

There is a monastery on the Volga.

Not a monastery, but a fortress city.

Yeah, I had to fight.

They wanted to fill their pockets here.

And Mohammed's army,

And Razin atamans.

But he survived. Stop,

Having shaken off the remnants of the burn...

Once upon a time, an old man,

A monk named Macarius

He founded this abode.

And then there's the humming fair.

But it's all words, words.

Visiting is another matter.

At least through Bohr (seven versts not a hook),

At least across the Volga by ferry.

From Lyskovo to the monastery

Swim in sunrise half nap.

age-old pain

And touch old wounds.

And make sure all the way.

Eventually they lead to the temples.

Holy Trinity Makarievsky Zheltovodsky Monastery was founded in 1435

In 1439 the monastery was destroyed by the army of Ulu-Muhammad.

*** in 1670 the monastery was besieged by Stepan Razin’s associate Maxim Osipov with his squad.

**** at the walls of the monastery in the first half of the 17th century was born the famous Makariev (Nizhny Novgorod) fair

About 100 km from Nizhny Novgorod down the Volga is the Holy Trinity Women's Monastery, founded in 1435 by Makarii Zheltovodsky and Unzhensky. Makariy was born in Nizhny Novgorod, was a novice of the Pechersk Ascension Monastery. Then he traveled a lot and founded several monasteries.

The monastery on the Yellow Waters lake (the lake was subsequently absorbed by the Volga River) was ravaged by the Mongol Tatars in 1439, but restored by the monk Abraham in the 20s of the 17th century. Here, however, bargaining gradually developed: people came every year in July to venerate Saint Macarius and brought the goods for exchange. Thus developed the famous Makariev (Nizhny Novgorod) fair, which after a major fire was moved to a more convenient place for trade confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers (1817).

The monastery has preserved an ensemble of the mid-17th century and later churches. In the Holy Trinity Cathedral you can see authentic ancient paintings. In the temple in honor of Makariy Zheltovodsky and Unzhensky are the main shrines of the monastery - icons, the honest head and finger of St. Macarius.
