Nizhny Novgorod

Alleys, streets, courtyards: a tour of the non-tourist Lower

Description:

City sights are beautiful, but the true atmosphere of the Lower can be felt not only in the central streets and squares.

Sometimes it is better to turn off the tourist routes to find yourself in cozy alleys or mysterious courtyards, which also store a lot of interesting things. Here you can meet intricate graffiti (and the Nizhny Novgorod school of street art is one of the best in the country), and unusual street decoration, and even stone chambers of the XVII century.

Traveling along this non-tourist route, we will talk not only about the history of the city and the people who left their mark in it, but also about the modern life of Nizhny Novgorod residents, their traditions and habits.

The tour route may include:

Street. Slavyanskaya and Korolenko, where modern street culture faces wooden buildings of the XIX century;

Malaya Pokrovskaya Street, where merchant estates and apartment houses frame masterpieces of modern architecture;

– Carpenter’s lane, where the spirit of philistine life of pre-revolutionary Russia was preserved;

Ilyinskaya and Gogol Street, where we will be able to get into pre-revolutionary front rooms and talk about the habits and preferences of the Nizhny Novgorod merchants;

Street. Nizhny Novgorod, where elite and historical buildings coexist with frankly strange locations.

During the tour, we will pass by the most important Nizhny Novgorod monuments, we will find ourselves on the main observation decks. However, here we will try to look at the city, its history and modernity from a special, non-tourist point of view.

This walk will complement and diversify your idea of Nizhny Novgorod, which is interesting not only for the Kremlin and old business districts, but also for “secondary” streets, each of which is able to tell its own story, not told in guidebooks.
