The Underworld of Peshelani

The only underground museum of mining, geology and speleology in Russia is located 120 km from Nizhny Novgorod, near Arzamas. The museum is located in an operating mine, on the worked site, occupies about three thousand square meters and consists of eight halls. Located at a depth of 70 meters, the museum introduces the gypsum mine, with the basics of mining, you can see how gypsum is mined. Industrial development of the local gypsum deposit began in the 30s of the XX century. One of the halls is dedicated to geology, where about 300 samples of rocks mined in Russia and neighboring countries are presented. An underground lake with a waterfall, artificial stalactites, samples of paleotic painting found in the caves of France, Spain, Italy, Russia, voluminous pictures of the halls and galleries of the caves of the Urals and the Caucasus, a shungite room, a stay in which (four sessions of 20 minutes) gives an effect equal to a two-week rest in Sochi, expositions of Gzhel porcelain production, products of the Bornukov stone-carving factory, the River of Horrors and Gehenna of Fire - all this is presented in the museum and invariably attracts visitors. The mystical entourage of the underground tour is given by the unique exposition “The Lost World”, the main exhibits of which are seven prehistoric reptiles. The exposition is equipped with modern lighting equipment: high-quality illumination creates a mysterious atmosphere of the world of dinosaurs in one of the most amazing and exciting eras of the history of life on Earth.

The excursion to the mine takes place as part of organized groups of 10 people accompanied by an instructor guide.

Visitors to the museum are given special mining equipment - warm clothes and shoes, helmets and lanterns.

Attention! Children under 14 years old are not allowed in the Museum of Mining, Geology and Speleology.

And for children organized an interesting and fascinating excursion complex, consisting of the zoo "Safari" and the exhibition of reptiles "Jurassic Park", which is located on the surface, at the entrance to the mine.

In addition, you can visit the exhibition center of folk art crafts "Afanasy".

The exhibition hall presents products of folk art crafts of the Nizhny Novgorod region. Among the exhibits are products of 23 enterprises: Khokhlom, Gorodetsk, Semenov paintings; Cossack filigree, Chkalov gypure, art embroidery, Pavlovsk art products of the Kirov plant, hand weaving, stone-cutting factory "Bornukovsky Cave", a branch of the Peshelan gypsum plant. Particular attention of visitors is attracted by the snow-white-blue collection of porcelain factory "Gzhel".

Guests of the VC "Afanasy" can not only buy authentic souvenirs, but also take part in master classes for the manufacture of their own unique gift product. We offer two types of exciting activities for children and adults: painting a plaster figure and making a rag doll-amulet.
