The Christmas side was called this place by the name of its main street – Christmas. This is the oldest part of Nizhny Novgorod. It was here in 1221 that the founder of the city, Grand Duke of Vladimir-Suzdal Georgy Vsevolodovich, grandson of the founder of Moscow Yuri Dolgorukov, came ashore with his squad. At the confluence of the Oka and the Volga, he laid the wooden fortress of Novgorod of the Ponyzov land, the future Nizhny Novgorod.

Rozhdestvenskaya Street is a business part of the merchant Nizhny, Pocket of Russia, the trading capital of the Russian Empire. The richest merchants dreamed of having on Christmas Street profitable houses, which housed banks, exchanges, offices, hotels. Therefore, here was the most expensive land of Russia in the XIX, more expensive than on Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg. And thanks to the work on creating the appearance of the Christmas best architects of the Russian Empire, they wrote about it: “by the beauty of the buildings and the crowd, it is the best of all the streets of the city.” And the first electric lights in the city, and the first tram in Russia – all this Christmas.
